Upcoming Kirby

Was cleaning up a few things on the old site, and figured since I still get a fair level of traffic here thanks to old links and search engines I'd quickly mention that Mark Evanier has a coffee-table style artbook on Kirby coming out this fall, KIRBY: KING OF COMICS. This is not the comprehensive biography he's long promised, that is still in progress and will follow in a few years, but an art-heavy book designed to appeal to both established and casual fans.

As always, check the new home of the Kirby Weblog for updates and more details. It's a big year for Kirby reprints (massive hardcovers of the heart of the FF run and most of the Fourth World will be available by years end, plus a lot more).

Upcoming Kirby - The Artist Within

Thought this would be worth at least a mention, although obviously the Kirby is only 1% of the book. He is there on the cover, though.

Upcoming Kirby - Galactic Bounty Hunters

The long-planned Lisa Kirby / Mike Thibodeaux GALACTIC BOUNTY HUNTERS project, with some characters created by Jack Kirby (including Captain Victory), finally has a publishing home announced, some start-up in New York called Marvel, and should be out as a six-issue series starting this summer. Don't know how much actual Jack Kirby art there'll be in it.

Upcoming Kirby - Marvel in June 2006

Crazy month for Marvel on Kirby reprints, with lots of early 1960s westerns in various formats (presumably lots of overlap), the last ESSENTIAL FF and a rather expensive complete ETERNALS hardcover. And that CHAMPIONS collection should have a single Kirby cover, for a more trivial entry.

Upcoming Kirby - Marvel in May 2006

Big item this month is the tenth FF volume of MARVEL MASTERWORKS, including the last issues of Kirby's continuous run, with a few post-Kirby issues and some other special stuff included. Also, far more minor, the second ESSENTIAL volume of the original X-Men series has a handful of covers that Kirby did the pencils or layouts for.

Written by STAN LEE
Penciled by JACK KIRBY & JOHN ROMITA
Cover by JACK KIRBY
Certifiably the World's Greatest Comic Collaboration, the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby Fantastic Four run stands as one of the high-water marks in the history of the medium. The ten titanic years on the title laid the very foundation of the Marvel Universe, and birthed more amazing concepts and creative characters than perhaps any series before or since. In this tenth Masterworks volume, we celebrate the entire Lee/Kirby run with essays by critics, creators and luminaries in the field of comics.
But it just ain't waxing nostalgic, True Believer! This is a Marvel comic, after all! Expect plenty of explosive action and family drama a-go-go as the FF build up to their 100th issue featuring everyone from Doc Doom to Dragon Man! They'll also help mankind take one giant leap when the Kree's robot Sentry tries to stop the Apollo 11 moon landing! Just for good measure, we'll throw in the uncanny Inhumans and Attilan, and the whole shebang comes to a head when the mutant menace, Magneto, teams up with Namor in a bid to conquer the world and Nixon is not pleased!

Upcoming Kirby - Marvel Romance contents

Over on the Marvel Masterworks Message Board a Marvel editor has posted the contents of the upcoming MARVEL ROMANCE collection. A little bit less Kirby than I was hoping for (since they only include a Colan story from LOVE ROMANCES #101, none of the three Kirby stories), but still five stories, four never reprinted, one not in over 30 years, so that's okay, as is the healthy amount of Colan and Buscema work. And apparently some of this art is taken from some recently discovered original art, so it should look sharp.

"The Summer Must End!"
From Teen-Age Romance #84 (November 1961)

"By Love Betrayed!"
"Give Back My Heart!"
From Love Romances #102 (November 1962)

"The Dream World of Doris Wilson!"
"If Your Heart I Break---"
From Love Romances #103 (January 1963)

Upcoming Kirby - March 2006

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usBig month, the SILVER STAR book, reprinting the entire series from Kirby's pencils, should be interesting, more on that later. My thoughts on the VISIONARIES v2 selection are here . The hardcover for Gi/Ant-Man is surprising. It'll be about half Kirby, including every story he drew for the feature. ESSENTIAL NOVA will have three Kirby covers.

SILVER STAR - GRAPHITE EDITION
160 page 8x11 Trade Paperback - by Jack Kirby
Legendary artist Jack Kirby first conceptualized Silver Star in the mid-1970s as a movie screenplay, complete with illustrations to sell the idea to Hollywood. Too far ahead of its time for Tinseltown, Jack instead adapted his “Visual Novel” as a six- issue mini-series for Pacific Comics in the early 1980s, making it the last original creation of his career. Now, in SILVER STAR: GRAPHITE EDITION, “King” Kirby’s final, great series is collected at last, this time reproduced from his powerful, uninked pencil art! Read the complete story of Homo-Geneticus, the New Breed of humanity that spawns both hero (Silver Star) and villain (the nefarious Darius Drumm), leading to one of the most action- packed narratives and spellbinding climaxes ever conceived on a comics page! And as a special bonus, read Kirby’s provocative screenplay, reproduced in its entirety, including illustrations and never-published character sketches! Plus there’s pin-ups and other rare Kirby art, and an historical overview to put it all in perspective. A percentage of profits from this book go to the Jack Kirby Museum and Research Center, so don’t ask, just buy it! $20.00 cover price.

Upcoming Kirby - Visionaries v2

Amazon is now listing a second MARVEL VISIONARIES: JACK KIRBY volume coming out in April of 2006. Contents are:

Captain America Comics #1; Marvel Mystery Comics #23; Yellow Claw #4; Strange Tales #89, 114; Two-Gun Kid #60; Love Romances #103; X-Men #9; Tales of Suspense #59; Sgt. Fury #13; Fantastic Four #57-60; Not Brand Echh #1; Thor #154-157; Devil Dinosaur #1.

Lots of choices from CAP #1. I'm guessing the Red Skull story. MMC #23 is a Vision story I don't think has been reprinted before. Neither has that YELLOW CLAW issue (hopefully they'll have the full book, not just one story, although running the page counts quickly they're not going to manage all the Kirby content of all of these issues). STRANGE TALES #89 is the oft-reprinted "Fin Fang Foom", but it deserves it. #114 is the Torch against the fake Captain America, which hasn't been printed in colour in a long while. TWO-GUN KID #60 is the first issue of the new version of the Kid, hopefully they'll have both stories. LOVE ROMANCES #103 had two Kirby shorts, hopefully both will be in here. I've heard good things about "The Dream World of Doris Wilson". X-MEN #9 is the Avengers guest bit, so gets a sampling of both teams into the book. ToS #59 is the first of the Cap solo run, not really the best choice from that run. FURY #13 is of course the Captain America guest issue. That run of FF is the great Doom/Surfer storyline, which is fittingly enough parodied in NOT BRAND ECHH #1 ("I own one hundred pairs of stretch socks"), and that run of THOR is the Mangog story, also great stuff. DEVIL DINOSAUR #1, excellent.

So mostly really good choices. As usual I'd have liked a bit less super-hero, more other genre, but I can't complain about most of what was picked. Good sampling of inkers, with some Sinnott, Royer, Ayers, Giacoia, Stone, Severin, Simon. I'd gladly lose the Cap story from ToS for a pair of early Tales of Asgard shorts, especially since Cap is already in a golden age story, the Torch story, the X-Men story and the Fury story, and Ayers inking is well represented even without it. And much as I love him, I'd gladly drop Devil D. for some more 1950s stuff. Except that the 1970s should be represented somewhere, and Devil is the least likely to ever have a dedicated volume (Cap and the Panther already do, the Eternals will soon, 2001 is probably off-limits and Machine Man is much more likely than Devil). Tough call. Maybe trade Devil for two 1950s shorts (lots of good 5-pagers there) and a 1970s cover gallery, including one DD cover? Tough call with those FF and Thor epics eating up half the page count. If it were up to me I'd replace them with shorter bits (maybe a single issue and two-issue bit each, from different points in the run. Or keep the FF and replace the Thor epic with two single issues, one from the Stone inked run, one from the Everett inked run), reclaiming about 40 pages for some more short stories. Oh well, that's what volumes 3 to 10 will be for...

Upcoming Kirby - February 2006

[updated to include the AC reprint book]

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.usA couple of big things from in February. TwoMorrows has a new KIRBY COLLECTOR (#44 should be out soon). AC has some unspecified Kirby in a big book of old sci-fi reprints. Marvel gives SGT. FURY a hardcover, running all the way to #13, so it has all of Kirby's full stories for the series. Should be worth a look. Also, the MARVEL ROMANCE TPB should be about one third Kirby, the first time any of those have seen print in a long while (there's also a comic coming out where they re-script some old romance stories, including a Kirby one, but the less said about that the better). The recent MARVEL MONSTERS one shots get an oversized hardcover for some reason, including the reprint backups by Kirby. And in the trivial, ESSENTIAL MOON KNIGHT will have one cover by Kirby. DC's SHOWCASE PRESENTS HOUSE OF MYSTERY volume should have one Kirby reprint, "The Negative Man" (originally from #84, as reprinted in #194).

Upcoming Kirby - Marvel/DC in January 2006

Quite a few books. Two hardcover MASTERWORKS from Marvel, one the first reprinting the pre-hero fantasy books with the first ten TALES TO ASTONISH. And MACHINE MAN #1 is reprinted among a few other stories in another MILESTONES special.

Over at DC, the previously mentioned SHOWCASE PRESENTS: GREEN ARROW reprints all of Kirby's 1950s GA stories (11 stories, 67 pages) in black and white, and continues into the rest of the silver age solo stories and major crossovers.

Upcoming Kirby - Marvel in December 2005

Two Marvel collections with Kirby artwork among the contents. ALL-WINNERS #1 and #2 both have S&K Captain America stories. The one from #2 is currently unreprinted but should be in the GIANT SIZE INVADERS #2 before the Masterworks comes out, along with several other stories that will be in this hardcover. The S&K story from #1 has been reprinted once or twice before. And of course Kirby's WHAT IF issue was recently reprinted in MARVEL VISIONARIES - JACK KIRBY, so that's only of marginal interest, but he did also do the cover to #9 which should be in there. He also did an unused cover to #10, and Marvel has been running that kind of stuff in the back of their tradepaperbacks lately, so it might show up.

Upcoming Kirby - Marvel in 2006

Marvel apparently announced a general overview of some of their plans for 2006 at a retailers thing this past weekend. All plans are tentative at this point, of course. Most notable surprise is the plan for a hardcover reprint of Kirby's THE ETERNALS series of the 1970s. Also, an X-MEN OMNIBUS to come out when the next X-Men movie does, so presumably like the FF book about the first 30 issues, with letter columns.

Plans also for 24 volumes in the ESSENTIAL series and 18 in the MASTERWORKS, almost sure to be a few in each with Kirby (if I were betting I'd say the final Kirby FF volume for each of those is certain, and volumes of THOR in each are likely).

Upcoming Kirby - Marvel in November 2005

Four Kirby books in the latest solicitations, including some stuff never reprinted.

GIANT-SIZE INVADERS #2 - The story from ALL-WINNERS #2 has never been reprinted, so that makes this a must-have. The other stuff looks like fun, too, and that's a great price for it.

FANTASTIC FOUR: THE WEDDING SPECIAL - Yet another reprint of FF Annual #3. I'm going to hope in vain that we'll get a decent reprint of it this time around (as decent as you can get given the inking, at least). The new story in this issue sounds good, too.

MARVEL MASTERWORKS: THE FANTASTIC FOUR VOL. 9 - Wow, two volumes in one year? That's unexpected. Wonder if that means they'll finish up the Kirby run early next year, or this is just the "have something new when the movie comes out on video" thing. Anyway, each issue has a few pages that haven't been included in previous reprints.

ESSENTIAL MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE VOL. 1 TPB - Not mentioned in the solicitation, but Kirby did five of the covers for books reprinted in there, all but one of his TWO-IN-ONE covers.

Penciled by DREW JOHNSON
Cover by GENE HA
A true Collector’s Item celebrating one of the greatest events in comics history – the marriage of Reed Richards and Sue Storm! Hard to believe they tied the knot 40 years ago... and it certainly doesn’t seem that much time has passed to Reed and Sue themselves when a special evening out gives them a chance to look over their entire life together – past, present and future – in an all-new 30-page story by Karl Kesel and Drew Johnson. Also included as an added bonus: Reed and Sue’s original 1965 wedding extravaganza, guest-starring the Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Man and a cast of thousands – an epic that could only be told by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby! So, like all great weddings, this Special mixes something old (The original Lee/Kirby FF Wedding Spectacular) with something new (“The Life Fantastic” by Kesel/Johnson) – even though there’s nothing borrowed, and the only thing blue will be any fan who misses this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

FIELD TRIP!
That’s “Field Trip” as defined in the Lee/Kirby Dictionary, which means you’d better pack that bag lunch in unstable molecules and strap yourself in for a trip around the universe beyond your wildest imagination!

First stop: A little visit to the neighbor’s place, and hanging with the incomparable Inhumans and titanic team-up against Maximus the Mad!

Second stop: Europe. Paris is beautiful in the springtime, but that’s nothing. According to the brochure, Latveria’s lovely year round. You might want to take that visitor’s guide with a grain of salt, though. The savvy traveler never trusts a Chamber of Commerce run by Doombots.

Third stop: Down under. Way down under for a big-time battle with the Mole Man!
Last stop: Now here’s a trip that’s far out. The ever lovin’ blue-eyed Thing gets whisked away on a galactic tour as a gladiator in the scurrilous Skrulls’ slave arena! If that’s not enough outer-space exotica for ya, then welcome yourself to a world wrapped in the Roarin’ Twenties!

With tour guides like Stan and Jack, you’d best make those travel plans today, True Believer. Tickets for this trip are guaranteed to sell out! Collecting FANTASTIC FOUR (Vol. 1) #82-93

Upcoming Kirby - THOR Masterworks in October

In addition to the previously mentioned JACK KIRBY COLLECTOR #44 and Marvel monster books with Kirby reprint backups, the latest solicitations see a new hardcover Masterworks volume for Thor, only five years after the last one.

Collects 10 issues from JiM #121 to THOR #130, some great comics featuring Thor in battle with the Absorbing Man, Hercules and the hordes of the Netherworld, plus some of the best Tales of Asgard back-ups, with the conclusion of the grand quest and the revelation of Ragnarok and the aftermath which evokes the New Gods. The reproduction of a few of these was a bit weak in the recent ESSENTIAL THOR v2, so hopefully they can be punched up a bit here. The usual $50 price for the regular edition, $55 if you want a dustjacket matching the first printings of the early volumes.
